Upon graduating from high school in 1941, Harry Kutik joined the Army. In the infantry, he fought in France and Germany, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant and earned a Bronze Star.

While his unit walked through a farm field on the last day of the World War II, Harry was hit by thirteen sniper's bullets. He was dragged from the battlefield and temporarily abandoned by his comrades as they fought on that day.

They came back for him and found him unconscious. The following months he drifted in and out of consciousness while undergoing numerous surgeries. Although the surgeons were able to save Sgt. Harry’s life, he was left a paraplegic.

His routine became one of daily obstacles, having to learn everything from personal hygiene and grooming to how to drive a car and have a family. Yes, life had dealt him more than anyone should have to bear, however, this experience gave rise to the realization that each day is, unto itself, a gift. His family shares the life story of this incredibly positive man in hopes that his story will be an inspiration to others. Sadly this is not unlike the stories of today’s wounded heroes.

To honor our returning disabled veterans and to assist them with the challenges they face, as they learn to cope with their new set of life skills, a Sgt. Harry Fund in memory of Harry Kutik, has been initiated through a Giants of Generosity giving circle.

Let us all partake in this effort to make life better for others, especially for those who are unable to help themselves. If Sgt. Harry could do it, we all can. For more information about the Sgt. Harry fund – check out our website at sgtharry.org
